Sorted Wallet, a non-custodial crypto wallet that claims to be designed for feature phones and low-powered Android devices, has integrated the Breez SDK to enable Lightning payments for its users.

Sorted Wallet’s Breez SDK Integration

According to the media release, the integration is part of Sorted Wallet’s mission to provide financial tools to the world’s unbanked, particularly the estimated 300 million users of basic mobile devices.

Technically, Sorted Wallet will be able to deliver a lightweight, non-custodial Lightning payment solution that functions on low-powered phones, expanding access to $BTC for people traditionally excluded from the financial system, Breez assured.

The integration of the Breez SDK coincides with a pre-seed investment from $USDT-issuer Tether, aimed at accelerating Sorted Wallet’s development and rollout.

With support from Breez and Tether, Sorted Wallet said that it plans to launch Lightning functionality by July 2025. Once live, the wallet is expected to allow users in underserved markets to send and receive $BTC and $USDT, pay merchants, and send remittances, all from the devices they already own.

“Through this initiative, users in underserved markets will be able to send and receive $BTC and $USDT, pay merchants, and conduct remittances—all from the devices they already own. The goal is to make digital financial tools as intuitive as sending a text message.”

$BTC on Low-Powered Phones: Why Integration is Key

As per Sorted Wallet, it turned to the feature phone market after discussions with the developers of KaiOS, an operating system for basic mobile phones.

The team identified a key obstacle: while $BTC has been heralded as a global, borderless currency, many of the people who could benefit most from it, particularly in emerging markets, lacked the technical means to use it.

The challenge was finding a solution that does not require users to run their own node or rely on custodial services, which would compromise user sovereignty and potentially introduce regulatory complications.

The Breez SDK provided an ideal alternative, according to Sorted Wallet.

“When technology is the problem, it is also often the solution. Lightning changed the economics of $BTC and added new uses, but running a client node locally was still too demanding for many feature phones. Sorted’s team considered building a custodial $BTC app but realized that would introduce new, mainly regulatory, obstacles. Besides, you do not empower people by taking possession of their money.”

In addition, Sorted stated that it explored other options  such as using Liquidity Service Providers or building a custodial app, but found they either added complexity or reduced user control. Instead, the firm shared that they chose Breez’s nodeless SDK, which was recommended by trusted developers and matched both their technical needs and commitment to decentralization.

What is Breez SDK?

Aside from enabling Sorted Wallet to support both $BTC and $USDT transactions, Breez SDK also allows the development of additional tools tailored to its users. These include a merchant app for small vendors to accept $BTC payments and a WhatsApp bot to simplify remittances, an essential service in many developing regions.

As a developer toolkit, the Breez SDK simplifies the integration of self-custodial Bitcoin Lightning payments into mobile apps without requiring users to operate their nodes or rely on custodial services.

The Breez SDK’s low-resource design makes it ideal for use on feature phones and basic smartphones. It preserves user control by ensuring private key ownership and offers flexible deployment options through either a lightweight “nodeless” setup or a full “Greenlight” node.

It also has no KYC requirements, no setup fees, minimal system demands, and built-in liquidity and fiat on-ramps.

What is Sorted Wallet?

Sorted Wallet, is a startup that aims to make $BTC and $USDT accessible to the underserved communities by supporting secure, self-custodial transactions.

It also supports cross-border remittances, with options to cash out to local banks or convert to mobile airtime. Optimized for KaiOS and simple Androids, the wallet is compatible with multiple blockchains, including Ethereum, Polygon, TRON, TON, and BNB Chain.
