Attendees at St. Peter’s Basilica may soon experience a modern-day Pentecost, understanding the Pope’s sermon in their own native tongue regardless of the language spoken at the altar.

The spiritual and administrative center of the Roman Catholic Church has announced plans to utilize artificial intelligence (AI) to provide real-time translation for liturgical celebrations. The initiative aims to make the Mass more accessible to the global faithful.

A More Inclusive Mass Experience

In a report by EWTN News, the Vatican will debut a system capable of simulating real-time translation in up to 60 languages. Initial implementation is targeted for the second or third quarter of 2026.

How it Will Work

The system is designed to be accessible without downloading specialized apps.

  • Access: QR codes will be placed at the entrance gates of the Basilica.
  • Interface: Scanning the code directs attendees to a dedicated website.
  • Features: The platform provides real-time translation of readings, chants, and prayers in both audio and text formats.

The Technology

The initiative utilizes “Lara,” an AI tool developed by language solutions firm Translated, in collaboration with Carnegie-AI LLC, a company specializing in simultaneous interpretation technologies.

“St. Peter’s Basilica has welcomed the faithful of all nations and languages for centuries. By making available a tool that helps many understand the words of the liturgy, we want to serve the mission that defines the heart of the Catholic Church, universal by its very vocation.”

Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, Archpriest, St. Peter’s Basilica

St. Peter’s Basilica is one of the holiest sites in Christendom, traditionally recognized as the burial site of Apostle Peter, one of Jesus Christ’s 12 disciples and the first Pope. It serves as the principal location for Papal Masses.

The Vatican’s Tech Transformation

Despite its ancient roots, the Catholic Church is actively adapting to the digital age. Alongside the AI translation tool, the Vatican has introduced other technological upgrades:

  • SmartPass: A digital access system integrated into the Basilica’s website. Paired with a network of sensors, it allows for real-time monitoring of visitor flow to improve security and crowd management.
  • “Beyond the Visible”: A structural monitoring project featuring sensors installed in the Basilica’s foundations, facade, dome, and subsoil. This allows for real-time analysis of the 400-year-old structure’s physical condition.
