CCP Games has announced that a free trial for EVE Frontier, its in-development space survival game, will begin on Wednesday, April 1. The trial allows players to register as “Remnants” to access the game for free during its ongoing testing phase, titled “Cycle 5: Shroud of Fear.”
The latest development cycle also marks the official infrastructure migration of Eve Frontier from Ethereum to Sui blockchain.
Free Trial and Progression
During the free trial, participants take on the role of “Riders”, which are awakened clones with no memory, and must explore, build, and form alliances called “Tribes” to survive in a hostile galaxy.
Throughout Cycle 5, players can earn an in-game asset called “Grace” by completing missions, engaging in combat, and cooperating with other players. Earning Grace allows players to climb both individual and Tribe leaderboards.
Players who wish to retain their accumulated Grace after the testing cycle concludes can do so by acquiring Founder Access. A limited-time, game-access-only tier for Founder Access was made available for $19.99 from March 11 to March 31.
Web3 Integration: Sui Migration and Hackathon
Aligning with the game’s decentralized architecture, Cycle 5 introduced a major infrastructure shift by officially migrating to Sui blockchain.
To coincide with this transition, CCP Games launched the 2026 Frontier Hackathon, featuring an $80,000 prize pool. Web3 developers and builders can create mods that extend the EVE Frontier universe and develop tools and programs that function both inside the live game world (such as programmable in-game structures) and as external applications.
Gameplay Overhauls in Cycle 5
While the blockchain migration and hackathon are primary focuses for developers, the Shroud of Fear update also introduces several core gameplay and survival mechanics:
- Players can now manufacture their own clone bodies (“Shells”) and manage embedded skills through memory constructs called “Crowns.” If a Shell is destroyed, the skills and memories imprinted on it are permanently lost.
- Traditional dungeon structures have been replaced with persistent ecosystems distributed across solar systems.
- Multiple players can now collaborate to establish bases at L-Points, utilizing specialized defensive turrets (Autocannon, Plasma, and Railgun) designed to counter different classes of ships.
- Drone swarms now dynamically patrol and defend key locations within the galaxy.
- Ship physics have been adjusted to clearly distinguish the agility and active defenses of light ships from the mass and passive durability of heavier vessels.
